The $700 Billion Dollar Question? U.S. House Votes “NO!”

HOUSE REJECTS “THE BIG BAILOUT”

BREAKING — Just moments ago, the United States House of Representatives rejected President Bush’s proposed bailout of the country’s financial markets in a vote of 228 to 205.

140 Democrats voted yes on the bailout plan, 133 Republicans voted no.

(See how your Representative voted here.)

Right about now, you might be wondering why so many Democrats fell in line to support this secret plan (secret, that is, to most members of Congress and the American public), and why it was the president’s own party  who took a strong stand against it.

Yeah, we’re kinda wondering that, too.

Maybe these Republicans just woke up and remembered that they are supposed to be fiscal conservatives, after all? That more government and big government is not the answer to our country’s finanicial woes?

WHAT’S THIS? REPUBLICANS PROVING THEY’VE GOT A PAIR?

Rep. Michael Burgess (R-TX) reports from the floor of the House that the Republicans have been cut out of the process and called unpatriotic for not blindly supporting the bailout. He says the only debate has been about what talking points to use on the American people. The most ominous revelation is when he claims the Speaker has declared martial law.

“I have been thrown out of more meetings in this capital in the last 24 hours than I ever thought possible, as a duly elected representative of 825,000 citizens of north Texas.” Said Congressman Burgess.

Burgess asks the Speaker of the House to post the bailout bill on the internet for at least 24 hours instead of passing the largest piece of legislation in US financial history in the “dark of night.”

The most frightening part of Rep. Burgess’ one-minute floor speech is when he says, “Mr. Speaker I understand we are under Martial Law as declared by the speaker last night.”

FLIP, FLOP AND FLY

As for the Democrats, there is absolutely no reasonable explanation for their acquiescence, even aggressive cheerleading for this bill (with a bit of “the sky is falling” fearmongering thrown in for good measure).

Numerous opinion polls taken this week came to wildly varying conclusions about the level of support among Americans for the Bush administration’s $700-billion plan. Some polls showed public support for the bill was at only 5% as of Sunday night. But the increasingly loud roar coming from all corners of the nation shows that the idea of a bailout has touched a particularly sensitive nerve among the public.

According to the Los Angeles Times, a spokesman for Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) said her five offices had doubled staffing to deal with the constantly ringing phones. Through late Thursday, Feinstein’s offices had received a total of 39,180 e-mails, calls and letters on the bailout, with the overwhelming majority of constituents against it. The spokesman said the volume was as great as during the immigration debate and at key points during the war in Iraq.

Rep. Linda T. Sanchez (D-Lakewood) was also hearing it from her district, which includes parts of the city of Los Angeles and unincorporated L.A. County. “My constituents are telling me loud and clear that they aren’t convinced,” she said in a statement.

Typical of the tone of such contacts, Sanchez’s office said, was a missive from a constituent in Whittier:

“The bailout legislation is being rammed through Congress in a matter of days. This is an illegal power grab by the White House and their richest friends on Wall Street.”

THE PEOPLE AREN’T BUYING IT…SO WHY ARE THE DEMS IN CONGRESS IGNORING US?

Clearly, the people certainly let their elected reps know how they felt over the weekend. They overwhelmingly instructed their Congresscritters to vote “no” on the bailout bill. So why did so many Democrats choose to flat-out ignore the will of the people?

The Associated Press reported Saturday that House Democrats backed off the idea of protecting bankrupt homeowners facing foreclosure in the bill.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., told Democrats at a closed-door meeting Friday evening the provision would be a deal-breaker for Republicans who she has said must deliver substantial votes for the rescue plan. That’s according to several lawmakers who attended the session.

Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama had said earlier that the measure didn’t belong in the bailout.

Wait a minute…aren’t the Dems supposed to be the party of Main Street, not Wall Street? So how do we continue to believe all that nice populist rhetoric when it seems this party can’t seem to roll over fast enough for a president they claim to distrust, even despise? What is the moral justification for taking the side of big banks over the millions of ordinary Americans who are losing their homes?

And what’s with the Republicans acting like…Republicans for a change?

If anyone out there can explain this most puzzling phenomena to us, we’re all ears. In the meantime, let’s make it funky now…1, 2, 3….hit it!

  1. Wall St. Bailout

“GIVE US ALL YOUR MONEY…OR THE DOG GETS IT!”

Wall Street has ascended into a tower from which it can look out over the destruction to the American taxpa- No, to Wall Street.

Wall Street does not want harm to befall the American taxpayer.

But Wall Street can’t be held responsible for what Wall Street does if American’s don’t fucking hand over the cash, Mmmmm ‘kay?

Please send your prayers and bullion to: Wall Street, c/o Wall Street.

If Wall Street receives the cash, Wall Street will contact you to let you know how it’s doing.

But don’t bother Wall Street with stupid calls all hour of the day asking when the 700 Billion’s going to fix things.

Wall Street will call you (or there’ll be something on CNN about it) to let you know when the Angel of Death is passed.

    Frequently Asked Questions: (FAQ)

Q: Ah my fucking gaaaaahh- if Wall Street doesn’t get 700 Billion by midnight tonight- I’m going to lose my job! And I’m gonna TELL EVERYONE about it, because I can post anonymously on Internet message boards!

A: Thats’ right. Let everyone know. If Wall Street doesn’t get the money, many innocent people other than Wall Street may be harmed. No one wants this beautiful Labrador puppy to be tossed into a fire barrel down by the docks but if people don’t take you seriously- you may lose your job and the puppy gets to dance in the flames. Wall Street is keeping all options on the table.

Q: Why won’t our legislators just- goddamnit! JUST GIVE THEM THE MONEY NOW!

A: It is terrible, isn’t it? If Wall Street hurts you and yours it’s not Wall Street’s fault- it’s your fault! You made Wall Street angry and scared. The question is really why are YOU out to hurt Wall Street?

Q: The President came on and gave a really short adress a few nights ago that it was basically the financial end of the world? Why…why would he do something like that?

A: To heighten the importance of you needing to give Wall Street 700 Billion.

Q: We bailed out the Airline industry and they fucked us and ran off with the money! Why should we believe YOU, Wall Street?

A: How did this asshole get in? This is the END of question time!

    PB

(No, seriously….give us your wallet. Hand it over.)

  2. Yeah…we want your wallet, your stock portfolio, your dog, and…oh, give us your house, too.

The Big Payback. Heh. Right on.

I see the stock market nosedived, closing at -777.68 today.

I find that interesting, as the number 777 carries a very powerful meaning to occultists:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/777_and_other_Qabalistic_writings_of_Aleister_Crowley

That’s almost as interesting as when the lucky numbers in the NY Lottery were 911 on the first anniversary of the attacks, September 11, 2002.

On that same day, the Standard & Poor 50 Futures contract closed at 911.00.

    WTH?

  4. I should add to this story that there are several Democrats in the House who are also sounding the alarm. For example:

    - Congresswoman Kaptur (D-OH) says:

“My message to the American people don’t let Congress seal this deal. High financial crimes have been committed.

The normal legislative process has been shelved. Only a few insiders are doing the dealing, sounds like insider trading to me. These criminals have so much political power than can shut down the normal legislative process of the highest law making body of this land.”

We are Constitutionally sworn to protect and defend this Republic against all enemies foreign and domestic. And my friends there are enemies.”

The people pushing this deal are the very ones who are responsible for the implosion on Wall Street. They were fraudulent then and they are fraudulent now.”

    Thank you for posting that.

Just because we won the victory yesterday doesn’t mean we won the battle. It just means we won the 1st round of the fight. We need to keep letting our elected representives know that we the American people do not want this bailout. That if the Democrats cave in and again ignore the will of the American people who they say they care about than we will vote them out of office. With the election so close we might just hit a nerve and force them to do what is best for the people and not what is best for those corporations who control them.

  6. Hal

Congresswoman Kaptor is co-sponsoring a bill that would provide relief to ordinary Americans, but does NOT include a bailout for Wall St.

That’s great, BUT the Senate is planning a vote tomorow (Weds.) on the bailout plan. (Yes, the same bailout the House overwhelmingly rejected)

We’ve got to STOP this again, like we did on Monday!

(So many concerned Americans flooded the House website to protest the bailout that the server CRASHED!)

So we recommend calling instead of emailing. Please call the Capitol switchboard and tell your Senator to VOTE NO on the bailout!

    Here’s the number: (202) 224-3121
