8/8/08 Isn’t John Edwards’ Lucky Day

Remember these tees? Perhaps the new ones should read John Edwards is toast.

Remember these old tees? Perhaps the new ones should read "John Edwards is toast."

 * Looks like John Edwards, the populist Democrat once hailed as “a new RFK” is most likely off Senator Obama’s VP list.

Former presidential candidate John Edwards, who won nationwide praise and sympathy as he campaigned side-by-side with his cancer-stricken wife, Elizabeth, admitted in shame Friday he had had an affair with a woman who produced videos for his campaign.
Acknowledging a sex scandal he had dismissed as “tabloid trash” only last month, Edwards said he had told his wife and family long ago, but “I had hoped that it would never become public.”

He denied fathering a daughter, born to the woman with whom he had the affair, and offered to be tested to prove it. A former Edwards campaign staff member professes to be the father.

The former North Carolina senator, who was the Democratic vice presidential nominee in 2004, confessed to ABC News that he had lied repeatedly about the affair with 42-year-old Rielle Hunter. Hunter’s daughter, Frances Quinn Hunter, was born on Feb. 27 this year, and no father’s name is given on the birth certificate filed in California.

After the story broke Friday, Edwards released a statement that said, “In 2006, I made a serious error in judgment and conducted myself in a way that was disloyal to my family and to my core beliefs. I recognized my mistake, and I told my wife that I had a liaison with another woman, and I asked for her forgiveness. Although I was honest in every painful detail with my family, I did not tell the public.”

“I was and am ashamed of my conduct and choices,” he said. “With my family, I took responsibility for my actions in 2006, and today I take full responsibility publicly.”

Edwards declared his presidential candidacy in December 2006. His wife was at his side that day and campaigned enthusiastically with him and by herself in the months that followed. She announced in March 2007 that her cancer, formerly in remission, had returned and there apparently was no cure.

She and her husband said it was important for the campaign to continue.

Edwards dropped out midway through this year’s primaries after it became apparent he could not keep up with front-runners Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton. He recently endorsed Obama and has been mentioned as a possible running mate.

He was John Kerry’s running mate in 2004 when Kerry lost to President Bush.

In his statement, he said, “It is inadequate to say to the people who believed in me that I am sorry, as it is inadequate to say to the people who love me that I am sorry.

“In the course of several campaigns, I started to believe that I was special and became increasingly egocentric and narcissistic. If you want to beat me up feel free. You cannot beat me up more than I have already beaten up myself. I have been stripped bare and will now work with everything I have to help my family and others who need my help.”

The National Enquirer first reported on the affair in October 2007, in the run-up to the Democratic primaries, and Edwards denied it.

“The story is false,” he told reporters then. “It’s completely untrue, ridiculous.” He professed his love for his wife, who had an incurable form of cancer, saying, “I’ve been in love with the same woman for 30-plus years and as anybody who’s been around us knows, she’s an extraordinary human being, warm, loving, beautiful, sexy and as good a person as I have ever known. So the story’s just false.”

Last month, the Enquirer carried another story – the blaring headline referred to an Edwards “love child” – stating that its reporters had accosted Edwards in a Los Angeles hotel where he had met with Hunter after her child’s birth. Edwards called it “tabloid trash,” but he generally avoided reporters’ inquiries, as did his former top aides.

He said in his statement Friday he had “used the fact that the story contained many falsities to deny it,” and he called that “being 99 percent honest.”

In an interview, scheduled to air on ABC News’ “Nightline” Friday night, Edwards said the tabloid was correct when it reported on his meeting with Hunter at the Beverly Hills Hilton last month.

A number of mainstream news organizations had looked into the adultery allegations but had not published or aired stories. But newspapers in Charlotte and Raleigh, N.C., recounted the Enquirer’s allegations in prominent articles on Thursday.

The Edwardses have three children – Cate, Jack and Emma Claire. Another son, Wade, died at 16 in a 1996 car accident.

What was I thinking?

"What was I thinking?"

David Bonior, Edwards’ campaign manager for his 2008 presidential bid, said he was disappointed and angry at Friday’s news.

“Thousands of friends of the senator’s and his supporters have put their faith and confidence in him, and he’s let them down,” said Bonior, a former congressman from Michigan. “They’ve been betrayed by his action.”

Asked whether the affair would damage Edwards’ future aspirations in public service, Bonior replied: “You can’t lie in politics and expect to have people’s confidence.”

In 1999, when Edwards was a senator, he said of President Clinton and his affair with Monica Lewinsky:

“I think this president has shown a remarkable disrespect for his office, for the moral dimensions of leadership, for his friends, for his wife, for his precious daughter. It is breathtaking to me the level to which that disrespect has risen.”

In 2006, Edwards’ political action committee paid $100,000 in a four-month span to a newly formed firm run by Hunter, who directed the production of four Web videos showing Edwards in supposedly candid moments as well as in a public speech talking about morality.

The payments from Edwards’ One America Committee to Midline Groove Productions LLC started on July 5, 2006, five days after Hunter incorporated the firm in Delaware.

Midline provided “Website/Internet services,” according to reports that Edwards’ PAC filed with the Federal Election Commission.

Midline’s work product consists of four YouTube videos showing Edwards in informal settings as he prepares to make speeches in Storm Lake, Iowa, and Pittsburgh, as he prepares for an appearance on “The Daily Show With Jon Stewart” and travels in Uganda in 2006.

Edwards’ PAC followed the six-figure payment with two smaller payments totaling $14,461, the last on April 1, 2007.

At the time Hunter was compiling the videos in 2006, Edwards was preparing his run for president.

Episode One of the four videos shows a conversation between Edwards and an unseen woman as the two chat aboard a plane about an upcoming speech in Storm Lake, Iowa.

Cutting between clips of the speech and the conversation with the woman, Edwards touches on his standard political themes, declaring that government must do a better job of addressing the great issues of the day, from poverty and education to jobs and the war in Iraq.

“I want to see our party lead on the great moral issues – yes, me a Democrat using that word – the great moral issues that face our country,” Edwards tells the crowd. “If we want to live in a moral, honest just America and if we want to live in a moral and just world, we can’t wait for somebody else to do it. We have to do it.”

Its time these politicians started taking responsibility for their actions – personally and publicly.

The guy had an affair for 2 years & maybe a child. So what? it’s his private business. But he should have stepped up, got a divorce, and acknowleged the other woman. Instead, he lied …and lied…and lied…until he was caught and was made to look like a hypocrit, a cheater, and a loser.

Lots of men have affairs (especially when their wives are ill), but Edwards’ biggest mistake was thinking he could cover it up and that he was going to get away with a lie.

Oh God – please tell me that Elizabeth isnt going to stand by his side and smile at the press conference. She’s just too strong a woman to let him steamroll her like this!!!

I am disapointed in Edwards for what he did. But since he is a private citizen, isn’t this really just between him and his wife?

I shudder to think what would have happened had he been the nominee for the Democratic Party!

But, really, how is McCain any better? He cheated on his first wife, who had been disfigured in a car accident, numerous times and dumped her for a much younger woman. At least Edwards stayed with his wife and children.

Hm. notice the timing of this story being dropped on a Friday, during the first day of the Olympics in China. 17 days before the Democratic convention. Notice how he only gave one interview – to Nightline – knowing it would air late on friday night and not many folks would see it.

And notice how the mainstream media happily goes along with Edwards’ requests…actually, they’ve been covering for him all along. And they’re still covering for him.

This story has been out there for over a year – the Enquirer, Huffington Post, and the alternative media reported it extensively. But all the while, the MSM plugged their ears and hummed a tune, refusing to investigate or report the story. Why? I dunno…maybe they are biased. Or maybe they’re just terrified to ask a candidate tough questions. (case in point: how about the media’s love affair with Obama?)

So now, the MSM has to sheepishly admit today that yes, they DID know about this affair and held their tongues. And we get a thousand mea culpas from them as they try to explain their obvious participation in the cover-up.

The silliest explanation I heard tonight was from CNN’s jessica Yellin. When asked why she (as a reporter covering the Edwards campaign) didn’t grill the candidate about the alleged affair, she basically said, “well, if you ask about a tabloid report, everybody looks at you funny and you sort of become a pariah in the press corps.”

So now it seems reporters are more concerned about their social relationships with other reporters and the candidates than actually GETTING TO THE BOTTOM OF A STORY – especially one that would have been helpful for voters in primary states this year to know.

How many people who voted for Edwards in the primaries would NOT have had they known of his extramarital affair?

The media PURPOSELY withheld this story until it wouldn’t be damaging. In other words, they PROTECTED John Edwards, knowing he was lying to the people. They cannot claim to be ignorant of the allegations, and cannot offer a viable explanation as to why they did not investigate.

As for Edwards, he led the voters on, just like he led his campaign staff on, just like he led his wife, his kids, and the other woman on. Am I forgetting anybody?

Do the math… Or just keep watching the pretty FOX and CNN Pictures your meant to smoke!!!

I’ll get back to the Armada soon… Edwards Sex scandal… MY ASS! The next time a politician sex scandal is foisted on the the tv, I’ll want to know where’s Dick Cheney!!! Oh yeah, he’s playing in the basement of the Pentacon again… you know Dick and wargames!!!

George Bush and [Georgian president] Mikhail Saakashvili should answer to the crimes that are being committed – the killing of innocent people, running over by tanks of children and women, throwing grenades into cellars where people are hiding,” Mestas said.

“The war is when military fight against military. But the Georgian army is killing innocent civilians. This is genocide,” he added.

A prime example of media bias in shielding Georgia from responsibility for the carnage is the fact that news outlets like the BBC continue to report that 1500 civilians have been killed in Georgia, with the obvious inference being that these are victims of the Russian onslaught. But these victims were not killed in Georgia, they were killed in Ossetia – by Georgian forces.

As the Chimes of Freedom Blog elaborates, “While the Ossetians claimed over 1000 dead the BBC neither reported this or any newsreel coming out of Ossetia showing the destruction caused by the Georgian shelling of the breakaway republic. All we are getting is one-sided reports of the destruction being caused by the Russians.”

“The BBC is giving carte blanche to the Georgian point-of-view to be aired on its services while nothing whatsoever is being heard from the Ossetian side. The BBC’s repetitive playing of a statement by George Bush, given several days ago, without balancing these against statements from the Russian side indicates where the BBC is coming from.”

Other mainstream news outlets are either aping the portrayal of Georgia, which enjoys the support of the American empire and NATO, as a poor isolated little country under brutal assault by the big bully Russia, or simply ignoring events altogether and obsessing about John Edwards’ extramarital affair.

In reality, Georgia is being used as a proxy client state through which the U.S. and NATO are advancing their geopolitical motives – to the cost of Ossetian, Georgian and Russian civilians alike caught in the middle of the carnage.

As Professor Michel Chossudovsky explains, “Georgia is an outpost of US and NATO forces, on the immediate border of the Russian Federation and within proximity of the Middle East Central Asian war theater. South Ossetia is also at the crossroads of strategic oil and gas pipeline routes.”

“Georgia does not act militarily without the assent of Washington. The Georgian head of State is a US proxy and Georgia is a de facto US protectorate.”

The price of the U.S. and NATO’s latest proxy war is already being paid with the deaths of thousands of innocent civilians – along with American mercenaries supporting Georgian forces.

According to the president of South Ossetia, Eduard Kokoity, the bodies of black men were found at the site of one battle near a school.

Russian envoy Dmitry Medoyev indicated the men may have been American mercenaries.

“In yesterday’s attack, the advancing tanks were supposedly crewed by Ukrainians. Two unidentified bodies found today are said to have black skin. Possibly they are Americans but we can’t say for sure yet. We will be able to publish the official conclusions after carrying out special tests,” Medoyev said.

Last month, the United States, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Ukraine conducted Immediate Response 2008, a joint training exercise said to be in “spirit of the NATO Partnership for Peace program,” according to Blackanthem Military News. Immediate Response 2008 was held at the Vaziani Military Base in Georgia.

In another report, a woman interviewed by Russia Today in Tskhinvali, South Ossetia, talked about the presence of Georgian troops with American insignias. “There are lots of bodies over there, a lot of people have been killed, mostly Ossetians, but also Georgians, they had American emblems on their forearms and they were in black uniforms,” she said.

Black uniforms are a trademark of Blackwater and DynCorp mercenaries (see Chris Hedges, America’s Holy Warriors). DynCorp’s presence in Eastern Europe is well documented, particularly in occupied Bosnia where it engaged in sex-trafficking and prostitution.

In a Friday press conference, Chairman of Russia’s State Duma Security Committee Vladimir Vasilyev said without U.S. aid, Tbilisi would have been unable to start military operation in South Ossetia. “The further the situation unfolds, the more the world will understand that Georgia would never be able to do all this without America,” said Vasilyev. “In essence, the Americans have prepared the force, which destroys everything in South Ossetia, attacks civilians and hospitals.”

It is entirely feasible the U.S. has “prepared the force” with mercenaries as well.

Lowest of the lows. I work with people who have to deal with cancer and I am always shocked at what the spouses are capable of doing during crisis. Sad, very sad. If this man cannot control his selfish tendencies during his own family’s crisis, then why should I believe that he would take care of the country?
