Announcing the Launch of RFKJrNews.com

ANOTHER *NEW* SITE GOES LIVE OCT. 1

GUARANTEED TO FLOAT BETTER THAN A LED ZEPPELIN

Okay, so it’s not exactly as earth-shattering as the news that Led Zeppelin might be doing a reunion tour next summer after all (I mean, that’s BIG!), but we do have a pretty darn important annnouncement for you:

On October 1st, RFKJrNews.com will be born into our ever-growing family tree of websites, and we think you’ll like it.

RFKJrNews.com will be an important news and information source for Kennedy’s supporters who want the very latest on what Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is up to – where he’s speaking, what he’s saying, what he’s doing – and why you should care.

Over the past year, the RFKJrforPresident.com website has provided this service as a way to keep Bobby’s fans informed and involved, and your response to our efforts has truly been amazing. Our editorial staff finally decided it was time to have a separate sister site devoted exclusively to coverage of RFK Jr. News, while keeping this site focused on its’ original mission: to convince Mr. Kennedy to run for president.

After October 1st, the Kennedy for President site will remain online with links to our petition drive and articles relating to the presidential race, but gradually you will notice the majority of our daily news coverage moving over to the RFKJrNews.com site.

Our story archives and your comments have already been moved over to RFKJrNews.com. Of course, the archives and comments will remain on this server forever as well.

Now seems a perfect time to make the move, as the 2008 presidential election season moves into its’ final month. With talk of a run in 2012 already in the air, we’re re-tooling the mission of the Kennedy for President website and our petition drive to reflect that. Meanwhile, we wish to keep Bobby’s supporters informed on the latest news, so we think the RFKJrNews.com site will serve that purpose nicely.

Of course, you can expect the same quality reporting, timeliness, responsiveness and smart-ass, cutting commentary you’ve come to expect from us on the new site. As our team of volunteers, readers and editors continues to grow, so does our mission and our goals for the future. We’re so glad to have all of you on board, hope you will enjoy the new RFKJrNews.com site, and that you will post your thoughts there often!

RFKJrNews.com is destined to become our flagship site over the months ahead, so come grow with us.

And don’t forget to keep our sister sites in your bookmarks as well:

http://TheKennedys.Wordpress.com

http://Kennedy4President.com

http://RFKin2012.com

And if you have a news tip or RFK-related story you’d like to submit to any of our sites, please drop an email to our managing editor, Tiger Haynes.

Thanks for reading this important announcement, enjoy the new site, and crank up that Zeppelin, dude!

* Enjoy this rare performance of Zep in their prime from Earls Court, May 25, 1975.

(What kind of “plant” is Robert smoking there, anyway? Hmm…?)

PS – Don’t want to break any hearts here, but I have it on very good authority from an unimpeachable source (this blog’s own Founding Editor, New Frontier, herself a musician of some renown) that the Zeppelin reunion rumor is, alas, only a rumor this time. She confirmed it with Mr. Plant personally backstage at the Austin City Limits festival Saturday night…

The $700 Billion Dollar Question? U.S. House Votes “NO!”

Storm clouds gathered over the Capitol Sunday evening as lawmakers huddled in closed session, trying to reach an agreement on the presidents proposed Wall St. bailout plan

Storm clouds gathered over the Capitol Sunday evening as lawmakers huddled in closed session, trying to reach an agreement on the president's proposed Wall St. bailout plan

HOUSE REJECTS “THE BIG BAILOUT”

BREAKING — Just moments ago, the United States House of Representatives rejected President Bush’s proposed bailout of the country’s financial markets in a vote of 228 to 205.

140 Democrats voted yes on the bailout plan, 133 Republicans voted no.

(See how your Representative voted here.)

Right about now, you might be wondering why so many Democrats fell in line to support this secret plan (secret, that is, to most members of Congress and the American public), and why it was the president’s own party  who took a strong stand against it.

Yeah, we’re kinda wondering that, too.

Maybe these Republicans just woke up and remembered that they are supposed to be fiscal conservatives, after all? That more government and big government is not the answer to our country’s finanicial woes?

WHAT’S THIS? REPUBLICANS PROVING THEY’VE GOT A PAIR?

Rep. Michael Burgess (R-TX) reports from the floor of the House that the Republicans have been cut out of the process and called unpatriotic for not blindly supporting the bailout. He says the only debate has been about what talking points to use on the American people. The most ominous revelation is when he claims the Speaker has declared martial law.

“I have been thrown out of more meetings in this capital in the last 24 hours than I ever thought possible, as a duly elected representative of 825,000 citizens of north Texas.” Said Congressman Burgess.

Burgess asks the Speaker of the House to post the bailout bill on the internet for at least 24 hours instead of passing the largest piece of legislation in US financial history in the “dark of night.”

The most frightening part of Rep. Burgess’ one-minute floor speech is when he says, “Mr. Speaker I understand we are under Martial Law as declared by the speaker last night.”

FLIP, FLOP AND FLY

As for the Democrats, there is absolutely no reasonable explanation for their acquiescence, even aggressive cheerleading for this bill (with a bit of “the sky is falling” fearmongering thrown in for good measure).

Numerous opinion polls taken this week came to wildly varying conclusions about the level of support among Americans for the Bush administration’s $700-billion plan. Some polls showed public support for the bill was at only 5% as of Sunday night. But the increasingly loud roar coming from all corners of the nation shows that the idea of a bailout has touched a particularly sensitive nerve among the public.

According to the Los Angeles Times, a spokesman for Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) said her five offices had doubled staffing to deal with the constantly ringing phones. Through late Thursday, Feinstein’s offices had received a total of 39,180 e-mails, calls and letters on the bailout, with the overwhelming majority of constituents against it. The spokesman said the volume was as great as during the immigration debate and at key points during the war in Iraq.

Rep. Linda T. Sanchez (D-Lakewood) was also hearing it from her district, which includes parts of the city of Los Angeles and unincorporated L.A. County. “My constituents are telling me loud and clear that they aren’t convinced,” she said in a statement.

Typical of the tone of such contacts, Sanchez’s office said, was a missive from a constituent in Whittier:

“The bailout legislation is being rammed through Congress in a matter of days. This is an illegal power grab by the White House and their richest friends on Wall Street.”

THE PEOPLE AREN’T BUYING IT…SO WHY ARE THE DEMS IN CONGRESS IGNORING US?

Clearly, the people certainly let their elected reps know how they felt over the weekend. They overwhelmingly instructed their Congresscritters to vote “no” on the bailout bill. So why did so many Democrats choose to flat-out ignore the will of the people?

The Associated Press reported Saturday that House Democrats backed off the idea of protecting bankrupt homeowners facing foreclosure in the bill.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., told Democrats at a closed-door meeting Friday evening the provision would be a deal-breaker for Republicans who she has said must deliver substantial votes for the rescue plan. That’s according to several lawmakers who attended the session.

Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama had said earlier that the measure didn’t belong in the bailout.

Wait a minute…aren’t the Dems supposed to be the party of Main Street, not Wall Street? So how do we continue to believe all that nice populist rhetoric when it seems this party can’t seem to roll over fast enough for a president they claim to distrust, even despise? What is the moral justification for taking the side of big banks over the millions of ordinary Americans who are losing their homes?

And what’s with the Republicans acting like…Republicans for a change?

If anyone out there can explain this most puzzling phenomena to us, we’re all ears. In the meantime, let’s make it funky now…1, 2, 3….hit it!

Brief Health Scare for Ted Kennedy

ted%20kennedy%20in%20hyannisport.jpg

KENNEDY RUSHED TO HOSPITAL, REPORTEDLY FINE NOW

Massachusetts Senator Edward M. Kennedy was back at home this morning after a health scare Friday. The liberal icon, who is being treated for a malignant brain tumor, was briefly hospitalized yesterday after suffering a seizure.

He was rushed to Cape Cod Hospital after a call was received at about 5:12 p.m. from the Kennedy compound in Hyannis Port. His representatives issued a statement saying doctors believed the incident was “triggered by a change in medication.” He returned home by 8 p.m.

Boston Globe photographer John Tlumacki caught a picture of Kennedy, stepping out onto the front porch of his home at the compound and looking at the pea-soup fog that enveloped the waterfront.

Story from the Boston Globe.

Is Your Vote Safe?

KENNEDY WARNS OF MASSIVE ELECTION FRAUD SCAM IN 2008

RFK Jr. with Sen. Christopher Dodd (D)

RFK Jr. with Sen. Christopher Dodd (D)

*This is a transcript from the September 20th broadcast of Ring of Fire, the weekly Air America radio show hosted by Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Mike Papantonio.

This week, Bobby and Pap outlined many of the tactics already being employed by Republicans to steal this election – and asked why Democrats aren’t doing anything to stop it.

Bobby: “There are about 30 scams the republicans are deliberately using, particularly in the swing states to get democratic voters off the rolls. These scams originate in the so-called Help America Vote Act which was passed after the Florida debacle in the year 2000. It was originally suggested by democrats and republicans but it was passed by a republican congress with a republican senate and a republican president. And instead of reforming what happened in Florida it basically institutionalized all the problems that happened in Florida. And institutionalized a series of impediments that make it very difficult for democrats to register, for democrats to vote and then for democrats to have their vote counted.

“One of these requirements under HAVA is called “the perfect match” and what that does is little known but it is devastating. A quarter of the voters in Colorado have just been removed from the rolls because of this–just this one scam. And what it does is they use a computer system to compare your registration application to all other government records of you in the state. So they’ll look at your social security records, your motor vehicle records and any time you’ve had any interaction with the government and if there is any information on your voter registration that is different than the information on another government record that they find they remove you from the voting rolls.

“For example, if I registered as Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and yet my motor vehicle license said Robert Frances Kennedy Jr. I’d be removed from the rolls. If your initial is different, if you leave an initial out, if you leave a “Jr.” out, if you leave a hyphen out in your name. And what they’ve done is a study in New York that said 80% of the errors are errors that were done by state clerks who are taking down this information. And particularly immigrant communities that people tend to vote democratic, people have names…spell Muhammad with an “o” instead of a “u” (crosstalk)

Pap: “Are the democrats suing to stop this?”

Bobby: “No, the democrats are doing nothing to stop it. In New Jersey, which is a swing state, 300,000 voters in New Jersey were just sent letters saying that they are now ineligible to vote. New jersey is nice enough to actually notify them–most states will not even notify them. And New Jersey intends to send out 870,000 letters so that is three quarters of a million people off the voting rolls in a state that could decide this vote by 50,000 votes. And these are democrats that are being pushed off the rolls.

Bobby: “Let me tell you about one other of these scams people should know about. If you’re a newly registered voter–and of course the democrats have done these gigantic registration drives–12 million people on registration–if you’re a new voter you MUST include your license or some other state I.D. when you come to vote. What that means is that if you’re a college kid (and college kids now–they’re sending in absentee ballots–they’re not going to the voting place, they do everything online or they do everything remotely–they don’t dream of going to the precinct house voting on election day and waiting in a long line) so if they send in the absentee ballot and they don’t include a color copy of their license their vote is going to be thrown into a trash can. And none of these people know this because you have had to read the law in order to know it. So there is no notification for when you fill out your registration form, so all of those 12 million people that the democrats have registered: those ballots are going to be just thrown out.

Pap: “And if democrats won’t talk about this how the hell’s anybody gonna know about it? I’m involved with this kind of thing every day–I didn’t know that until you just told me. The media is not talking about it. How in the hell is somebody gonna find this out? It’s just incredible.

Bobby: “Hopefully–Obama is getting 66 million dollars a month–hopefully somebody in the democratic organization is going to pay some attention to this before election day!”

Kennedy at Clinton Global Initiative

RFK JR. TO APPEAR AT NYC SESSION TODAY

Bobby Kennedy Jr. is taking part in this year’s New York mega summit for the Clinton Global Initiative. Founded by former President Bill Clinton in 2005, the foundation is a non-partisan catalyst for action that brings together a community of global leaders from various backgrounds to devise and implement innovative solutions to some of the world’s most pressing challenges.

Kennedy will participate in a special session on Friday morning focused on local leadership in our communities. (See full schedule and details below). You can watch this panel discussion live on the Clinton Global Initiative website as it happens. An archived broadcast should be available within 24 hours.

DETAILS:

Friday 9/26/08, 10:30 A.M. – 11:30 A.M.
New York West

Working Session 5: Local Leadership explores the emergence around the world of leadership from the ground up regarding climate change. From mayors to governors to civic groups to developers, local leaders are not waiting for national governments to act. These efforts are already delivering substantial emissions reductions and promise more progress for years to come. With roughly half the world’s population living in urban areas and the urban population expected to grow by more than 500 million people in the decades ahead, these programs are critical to the fight against global warming. This session will explore innovative ways that local leaders in all sectors can improve quality of life while combating climate change.

Program Participants:

Betrand Delanoë, Mayor, City of Paris
José María Figueres Olsen, Former President of the Republic of Costa Rica; Concordia 21, Grupo Felipe IV
Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., Chairman, Waterkeeper Alliance; Senior Attorney, NRDC
Xiaoyi (Sheri) Liao, President, Global Village of Beijing
Bill White, Mayor, City of Houston

THAT’S THE WAY THE COUNTRY CRUMBLES

After suspending his presidential campaign on Wednesday to devote all his time and energy to solving the country’s financial crisis (pissing off David Letterman in the process with a last-minute cancellation), senator John McCain somehow miraculously managed to slip away from Washington to address the conference in person. Whether or not he will find the time in his busy schedule to actually attend tonight’s first presidential debate at Ol’ Miss in Oxford, Mississippi, still remains to be seen.

Senator Barack Obama also addressed the Clinton Global Initiative on Thursday via satellite, then headed back to Washington to join senator McCain at a special White House “leadership” meeting (whatever that means) with President Bush (wait a minute…this is a “leadership” meeting? Run that by me again?) called to address the Wall St. bailout plan.

Well, it’s nice to hear all of our elected ahem, leaders are having such a wonderful time in Manhattan and D.C. this week, but meanwhile…Rome is burning…and all we can hear is the sound of a fiddle playing.

A Call to Action: OPEN THE DEBATES!

UH, AREN’T THERE MORE THAN LIKE, TWO DUDES RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT?

Editor’s note: The good people over at Ralph Nader’s campaign humbly asked us to remind you that Mr. Nader IS running for President of the United States (although you probably won’t see him in the big corporate debate this Friday night.) and that he needs your help now. This Thursday, September 25, is a National Day of Action to Open the Debates, and we’re totally, 100% down with that idea.

While this blog endorses no candidate in the 2008 race, we do believe in free and open speech and that  legitimate independent and third-party candidates should have the opportunity to have their voices heard in all of the nationally-televised presidential debates. So we post this action alert from the Nader campaign and encourage our readers to take part in the National Day of Action this Thursday, no matter which candidate they plan to vote for.  This isn’t about left and right — it’s about right and wrong.

If you’re a Democrat or a Republican, a Green, a Libertarian, or an independent, I’m sure you would agree that this is an issue of the utmost importance, that we should have fair and inclusive debates during the most critical election season of our lifetimes.

If these candidates are excluded from the debates, who will speak for the thirty percent of registered voters who consider themselves independents?  What about those voters who are still undecided?

Let’s hear what Nader, Barr and McKinney have to say. What harm could there be in giving them a forum?

If you share our belief that these debates should be fair and open, then please take action right away. Below are detailed instructions on how to contact the “Powers That Be.” Do it and give `em hell!

(Courtesy of VoteNader.org. Flyers available for download and distribution here.)

Here are five ways you can take action on Thursday to
Open the Debates:

  1. Write letters to the editor, to the corporations and organizations sponsoring the CPD debates, to the debate moderators and broadcast organizations, and to your friends and family members. Watch this space for links to writing samples you can use for your campaign.
  2. Call the Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD), Obama and McCain Campaigns, Talk Shows, and National and Local Media Outlets.
  3. Sign online petitions calling on the media and the Obama and McCain campaigns to agree to America’s demand to Open the Debates.
    • Support the Open Debates campaign to reform the Presidential Debates process by signing their online petition.
    • Crank up a budding petition effort started earlier this month at www.thepetitionsite.com, with the ambitious goal of gathering 100,000 signatures for the inclusion of Ralph Nader and Bob Barr in the debates.
  4. Print posters, fliers and literature to pass out and hang up at college campuses and other high traffic areas, and banners to display to morning and evening rush hour traffic. You’ll find links to downloadable materials at http://votenader.org/debates. Once again, check back often for additions to the collection.
  5. Protest outside the Democratic and Republican headquarters in your community, at corporations that sponsor the debates, at radio stations, newspapers and media outlets not covering Ralph Nader, Bob Barr, Cynthia McKinney, and other third party candidates.

Washington, DC 20036

Here is a sample email you can use when writing to Janet Brown, Executive Director of the CPD:

Dear Janet Brown, (jb@debates.org)

As a voter who is still undecided in the 2008 election, I ask that you allow all legitimate independent and third-party candidates take part in the upcoming presidential debates. I want to hear what Ralph Nader,Bob Barr, and Cynthia McKinney have to say.

Our process is supposed to be free and open, and it is my firm belief that all of these candidates should have the opportunity to be heard in a nationally-televised debate.

There are more than two candidates running for president, more than two political parties in this country. Please serve the American voter and include ALL of the candidates in these debates!

Thank you,
your name
