Nasty Caroline K. Rumors Leaked by Former BUSH WHITE HOUSE STAFFER!

GET A LOAD OF THIS

Just when you thought this whole Caroline Kennedy/Gov. Paterson senate seat story couldn’t possibly get any weirder, it does. Breathtakingly so.

For several days, we’ve been trying to track down just WHO was the mysterious “anonymous source close to Gov. Paterson.” Just who exactly leaked these slanderous, character-damaging rumors about Caroline Kennedy to the media (who in turn, didn’t bother checking their accuracy before rushing such potentially libelous stories into print).

After several strong denials from the Governor’s office claiming that Paterson had nothing to do with the leaks, Paterson reversed himself yesterday, admitting that – oops! – yes, it was someone on his payroll.

Hmm, yes, the Governor’s memory seems to be improving dramatically all of a sudden…

At first, Patterson didn’t provide further details as to who that person was, simply blaming an unnamed “PR flack”. Then, when pressed again to disclose the source of the “erroneous information” (down here in Texas, where I come from, we call `em LIES) the Guv finally `fessed up and admitted the PR flack was a former BUSH WHITE HOUSE DEPUTY PRESS SECRETARY!

Yes, you read that right.

Certainly explains quite a bit, does it not?

By the way, this story was penned by the New York Daily News’ Elizabeth Benjamin (seen here getting smacked down by Chris Matthews on Hardball for publishing this crap in the first place). Looks like Lizzie is now desperately trying to cover her butt and do the right thing…like checking sources before printing defaming rumor as fact. Not to mention doing her best to avoid a possible libel suit and save what remains of her journalistic reputation.

So here’s the full story – or at least what we know at this point. Read it and weep!

GOV’S HIRED GUN SHOT CAROLINE IN THE BACK

From the NY Daily News:

Gov. Paterson’s decision to go nuclear on Caroline Kennedy was a hatchet job run by a pricey out-of-state consultant who specializes in political scandals, disgruntled administration sources said.

Judy Smith, a Washington-based PR guru and former Bush White House deputy press secretary, orchestrated the ill-conceived character attack on Kennedy, sources said Sunday.

There was an internal agreement among Paterson staffers to refrain from attacking Kennedy.

Then came the leaks from inside the governor’s office that Kennedy’s supposed tax, nanny and marital problems had tanked her bid for Hillary Clinton’s Senate seat – taking many staffers by surprise.

“There were radically different statements all coming out of the governor’s camp at the exact same time,” a Paterson adviser said.

The administration released a formal statement insisting no information gathered from candidates for Clinton’s seat led to Kennedy’s withdrawal.

Yet it was Paterson who signed off on Smith’s plan to release dirt on Kennedy, the sources said.

Paterson loyalists are bemoaning his willingness to listen to a hired gun with little knowledge of New York politics, undercutting his own staff and projecting the image of an administration in chaos.

Paterson first brought Smith onboard last fall after his top aide, Charles O’Byrne, resigned in the wake of a tax scandal.

“It’s crazy. This never would have happened when Charles was there,” the adviser said. “In his absence, there’s a power vacuum, and a bunch of people are all doing their own thing.

“This is really, really serious,” the adviser continued. “Permanent damage has been done.”

The adviser suggested a “racial component” was at work when Paterson decided to bring on Smith, the first African-American woman to hold the deputy press secretary position at the White House. She came at the recommendation of Lisa Davis, a celebrity/media attorney who is the governor’s childhood friend.

“People like Lisa and Judy stirred the pot a little bit, and has always felt the Spitzer people didn’t respect him, so when Charles blew up, the governor’s old-time core people rallied around him and felt he needed a team that better reflected who he was,” the source said.

Judy Smith, seen here with former client Monica Lewinsky. And this woman decides its cool to leak a false story about caroline Kennedy having an extramarital affair, eh? If it werent so sad, it might actually be funny!

Judy Smith, seen here with former client Monica Lewinsky. And this PR genius decides it's cool to leak a false story about Caroline Kennedy having an extramarital affair, eh? If it weren't so sad, it might actually be funny!

Smith’s client list has included Monica Lewinsky, the family of murdered Washington intern Chandra Levy, Louisiana Rep. William Jefferson, who is battling corruption charges, and scandal-scarred former D.C. Mayor Marion Barry.

Paterson has used campaign cash to pay Smith’s firm, Impact Strategies, $64,367 since October, according to his Jan. 15 filing with the state Board of Elections.

The Kennedy fiasco has brought out the worst in the Paterson administration, revealing an executive chamber that is beset by infighting, lacking in leadership and in desperate need of a staffing shakeup.

“I don’t know who’s in charge there any longer,” one Democratic state senator said.

“David’s like a time bomb.”

UH-HUH

You can say that again, Mr.-or-Mrs. Anonymous-Democratic-state-senator-source. Sheesh, what’s up with all these snarky anonymous sources, anyway? Why don’t you come out of the BUSHES and let us see the whites of your eyes?

What are you afraid of? The truth or something?

  1. The truth is that not only does Paterson know who the source of the leak was (Judy Smith), but that Paterson is the only person in a position to have given the information to the leaker.

That’s because all the disclosure documents that were handed over by Kennedy were given to Paterson’s legal counsel’s office, which is under a professional obligation of secrecy.

The counsel then passed whatever might have been damaging in the records on to Paterson.

The information on Kennedy leaked hours later to news organizations with the understanding the source was someone “close to the governor.”

But just in case anyone thinks he deserves the benefit of the doubt, he doesn’t.

That’s because Paterson’s latest denials are merely the latest installment in a long series of lies told by the governor that many in government have started to call pathological.

Another interesting fact: Kirsten Gillibrand (a “favorite” of Chuckie Schumer) once worked for both D’Amato and Andrew Cuomo, another candidate for the senate seat(and former Kennedy in-law, but that’s another long and gory story). She was a special counsel when Cuomo ran HUD in the 1990s and her father was close to both Senator D’Amato and Governor Mario Cuomo in the same time period. Her former law firm, Boies, Schiller & Flexner, has been the largest single donor to her House campaigns, and David Boies, the senior partner at the firm, contributed $25,000 to Paterson’s campaign committee on December 23, 2008, while the governor was considering Gillibrand’s candidacy. Boies’ son Chris, also a partner in the firm, contributed another $25,000 on the same day.

That being the case, wouldn’t this make Paterson guilty of doing the exact same thing that Blago is currently being accused of?

I can hear that phone call now: “This is bleepin’ GOLDEN! I’m not just gonna give that bleepin’ senate seat away!”

For all that talk of how loaded Caroline Kennedy is (and Caroline is indeed quite well off), I guess she just was’nt quite ready to grease the Governor’s sweaty palms and become embroiled in a graft/corruption scandal.

    If so, good on her.

  2. It is also interesting to note that Bush/Paterson PR flack Judy Smith’s list of former clients also includes Larry Craig (after that little ahem, foot-tapping bathroom incident) and former Detroit mayor/new inmate Kwame Kilpatrick.

And of course, let’s not forget Monica Lewinsky.

Ms. Smith seems to have a thing for sex scandals….anyone looked into Ms. Smith’s private life?

Might be something juicy there. Let’s see how she likes having her dirty laundry spilled all over the front pages in red ink!

This is classic ratfucking straight out of the Nixon/Bush/Rove playbook.

Only trouble is, as Ms. Smith and Mr. Paterson may soon find out, the fucker turns out to be the fuckee sooner or later.

  3. MSM Sucks

This from Gawker today – thought ya’ll might dig it:

“Journalism is complicated. New York Post statehouse hack-in-chief Fred Dicker has been leading the pack in Caroline Kennedy-related anonymous smear stories. And now he’s basically outing his own anonymous source, to criticize the Governor. What?

Dicker had an anonymous source close to the governor tell him all about the various problems Kennedy had, and why Governor Paterson never would have picked her. Dicker dutifully wrote all this up last weekend. Now, Paterson, naturally, says he doesn’t know where that leak came from. Obviously he’s lying, but the usual procedure is for the reporter on stories like this to keep his fucking mouth shut, since yes, he knows who the leaker is and where he got his information, but he granted the leaker anonymity, so it’s bad form to scoff at official pronouncements or otherwise do things that would point to the identity of the source.

    Dicker says fuck that!

“Gov. Paterson yesterday insisted he had no idea who did the slime job on Caroline Kennedy – although the source of the information is about as close to him during the day as his wife is at night.

    He’s a liar.

The person responsible for the smear was an individual whose identity is well known to the press, whose full-time job is to do the governor’s bidding, and who is intelligent enough not to call reporters to damage Kennedy’s reputation without approval from the top – and that means Paterson.”

Ha, this would be a great and upstanding story were it not for the fact that Dicker’s own paper gave that source anonymity! Way to protect your sources, dude. Anyhow the Daily News already reported yesterday that the likely culprit behind the Kennedy attacks is Judy Smith, a flack close to the governor. The Post was just catching up to its own story. So weird. “

Thank you for pointing this out. I was reading his screed on the subway this morning and was like, dude, WTF? YOU are the one wrote all this anonymous bullshit, and YOU and the other reporters ate it up and regurgitated it, and now YOU, not the editorial board of your paper, but the FRIGGIN’ REPORTER, are calling out the very source that you depended on for your waste-of-time-and-space stories about Carolina Kennedy that in the long run, now mean nothing.
    Thank you.

  5. MSM Sucks

This just in…from the Village Voice:

    PATERSON: I’M NO LIAR–HONEST!
    http://blogs.villagevoice.com/runninscared/archives/2009/01/paterson_im_no.php

Here’s the news break from a mercilessly brief press conference that just ended in Albany which was supposed to deal with legislative negotiations over the budget deficit: Governor Paterson insists he’s no liar.

Paterson got to answer all of one question about the budget when a New York Post reporter asked him to comment on a story in today’s paper that calls him the “Lyin’ King” regarding his claim to have no idea who on his staff has been smearing failed senate candidate Caroline Kennedy (the paper also included an image of the governor with a Pinocchio nose).

    Not me, he responded.

“I had nothing to do with any negative characterizations of any of the candidates, particularly with Caroline Kennedy,” the gov insisted.

And although Paterson said just yesterday that he wants to find out who the leakers are, he’s not going to launch any investigation.

“I’m not going to hunt down scurrilous rumors from sources I don’t know,” said Paterson, adding: “I have no knowledge about these kinds of attacks.”

The story in question is by the Post’s stir-the-drink state editor Fred Dicker who flat out calls the governor “a liar.” That kind of talk used to be a heavy lift in the press, but in the post-Spitzer Albany world, anything goes now. Even the usually polite Albany Times-Union followed up with its own question whether Paterson has lost control of his own administration.

Then came the Daily News which suggested that he had to have signed off on the leaks, and went on to ask if he still wants to run for election next year.

He does and he will, but he’s got no hard feelings. Paterson, who suffers a kind of political Tourettes Syndrome that makes him joke or comment on anything and everything, didn’t sound the least bit offended at the less than deferential questioning he’s getting from the press corps. He did say he was answering the Kennedy smear question “for the last time.” But then went ahead and took another question on the same topic.

He did manage to resist responding, however, when a reporter shouted out a last question as he left the press conference: “Have you apologized to Caroline Kennedy?”

You should all start referring to this douche as “soon to be ex-Governor David Patterson”…

    And the fucker/fuckee line- priceless!

  7. JF

Whatever the circumstances of the leak, Caroline was not qualified to serve as US Senator. Somehow she felt she was above complying with financial disclosures required of lower-rank, or equivalent rank affiliates of the New York school district. What arrogance. Politics is not a family business, and I couldn’t be more pleased that she wasn’t selected.

  8. Like I said… Caroline, Robert… We don’t deserve you just yet..

Sue the bitch… “F” the NYT… Sue them too.. and call Patterson out for what he really is. Our Pinch-hitting Governor from the gang who couldn’t shoot straight! 2nd rate back up temp. Gov. in case our real Gov. got caught with hookers while campaigning to bust the very thing…

At least we’re off with a new arrest warrant for Karl Rove in the first week of Obama’s admin. Maybe, just maybe the scum can be scraped out from Washington one crevice at a time.

No more pedephile republican shoe peeing, Nazi propoganda slinging, antagonist, enemy of the state pardoning, pockets lining, filchering, flem-bob, filibustering, filthy, lying, personal inhaling self-flatulant surrounding adornmentist, self-indulged, real patriot, plummer joe-ish…. natterring navobs of negativism!

This bitch and other’s.. like Rove, are the master’s of shit… In-fact when it comes to shit.. They are the shit-tastics! Great job NF! as always…. I hope this shit winds up on all the right faces!!!

  9. Impeach Paterson

It’s not so hard to figure out why Gov. Paterson vows he won’t “hunt down” or “discipline” the source of the leaks (duh! Everybody already knows it’s Judy Smith. Certinly the press knows because they talked to her. And the Governor knows because he hired her, gave her the dmaging info and permission to run with it.)

But the real reason why the Gov’s just gonna “let this one slide?” Fred Dicker dropped an interesting hint in his article about Paterson’s cover-up:

“Gov. Paterson yesterday insisted he had no idea who did the slime job on Caroline Kennedy – although the source of the information is about as close to him during the day as his wife is at night.”

Sounds to me like Dicker is strongly implying that Paterson is protecting Judy Smith because he’s sleeping with her.

Not that this would surprise anyone. Paterson has slept with half the female population of NYS!

While there are many pro-Caroline backers here; I feel the first mistake was Robert F Kennedy, Jr not being considered. I don’t know him personally, but my instinct tells me that one reason I am a fan of his involves his passion and love for all the right things for all the right reasons. His history is loaded with risk-taking commentary that a less honest politician would never bother with.

I have not been to this site in a while, perhaps a month or so, because I am so saddend that Mr. Kennedy has chosen to remain out of elective gov’t. service. That is all he has ever done to anger me is to keep his tremendous talents and charisma out of govt. service. We are so hurting as nation for the likes of this heroic figure it makes most of us here, cry. I stated the last time I was here that although it seemed Obama would have the next election locked up before he even spent day 1 as President; we never knew what the future would hold and that I will keep praying for RFK, Jr. to take his lead.

Here we are, and his cousin is out of the running. I am sorry it was such a shaby incident for her, however, most of you here know I am not a Caroline fan. I may be wrong about her, but so be it. I don’t feel being an RFK, Jr. fan means I have to accept and endorse ea. member of his family. The senate seat his father held so nobly, is now open again in 2012. Our new President is not having a great time of it. His popularity is slipping and so is our nation along with him, into a economic and diplomatic mess. We knew it would not be easy, yet none of us expected Obama to loose his optimism and hope so fast. Obama has even stated he does not want to commit to a second term unless he can enable a remarkable turn-around for the deficit. He might be setting himself up for failure. I hope not. As pro-Bobby Jr. as I am, we all want our country to heal and our new President to do well.

It is very sad that Obama feels so dismal about his own future, and ours. I don’t think any of us expected him to clean up the wreakage he inherited in a short time. More important, I don’t believe his many devout followers ever thought they would hear Obama sounding so dejected and depressed. It was not pretty watching Caroline Kennedy, who worked so hard for Obamma getting so burned in such ugly primative tacttics. I wish her happiness and dignity in her future.

The mistake she made was not supporting her Uncle Bobby’s son. A man who has been so successful in his efforts to upgrade our environment, a man who truly inspires substantial loyalty and devotion of the kind not likely to erode in his first week in office. I just pray I live to see that day! Bobby, I say to you, when your Dad ran for President, we were all singing & praying “Give Peace a Chance”. Now, we are singing and praying to you, Give U.S. A chance!
